Bamboo-Tamboo

We are always up for trying something new at the Oasis, especially when it's musical. As I walked past the ICT suite on Friday afternoon, I find Mrs Keene and the VIP Friday club making a beautiful 'racket!' on some 'Bamboo-Tamboo'

It was great to see the children of all ages working together. We have been focusing on team work and collaboration not only to strengthen social skills but also as a means to develop resilience and independence.

Princess Leia the chicken visits Reception!

There was a special visitor in Reception, from a chicken coop far, far away! The children have been reading at the story of 'Chicken Licken' and Mrs Blair one of our Learning Support Assistants brought one of her chickens from home.....Princess Leia! All of children had a chance to get up close to Leia, including both of our Visually Impaired pupils. First hand experiences are brilliant opportunities for learning, for the Visually Impaired this is doubly so!

To understand what a chicken is, with feathers, wings, legs, feets and claws is tricky unless you have one to hand! Then with a little tactile explorarion and lots of talk, we can take a little step towards greater understanding about what is a chicken!!

Volcano!!!

At our Inreach session last week, the children got to watch a volcano erupt! Well they got to watch a model made in Reception erupt as Mr Cownie poured vinegar and bicarb with red food colouring into the bottle at the centre of the model.

It was cool, and we did it six times to make sure everyone got a go!

The children also had a chance to work with clay. Many made models, while some just enjoyed the tactile sensation of working with clay.

Mr Maker!

The children in Year 1 celebrated World Book Day today with a visit to Hedge End Sainsbury's dressed as their favourite book character to meet 'Mr Maker' from CBBC. All of the children had a thoroughly fantastic time, including one of our VI pupils, who is reg. blind. Part of providing an inclusive education is ensuring that our VI pupils have full and equal access to all parts of the curriculum, whether in the class room or not!

All the children made special book marks for World Book Day with words of encouragement from Mr Maker as he met each and every child.

It was a busy and full afternoon and this pupil really enjoyed the whole experience of going out with his friends to have a snack and meet a celebrity!

Thank You to Mr Maker and his team, Sainsbury's and their staff who were so welcoming, and to our parent helpers, who were brilliant!

Pavilion on the Park - Eastleigh

As part of our termly 'venturing out ' into the world, the staff and children of the Oasis visited the 'Pavilion on the Park in Eastleigh.
We were visiting the new 'Sensory4All' space.

This fantastic space has only recently opened. Thanks to funding from HCC the centre was able to design a multi-use sensory space for use by people of all ages and abilities.

The room incorporates an omiVista Interactive floor projection system where projected images respond to gestures and movement.

This was an amazing system which the children really engaged with. Over the hour we spend in the Pavilion we had flowers, rocks, even bumble bees all moving around the floor trying to avoid our feet!

The room also includes soft seating and floor pads, a large bubble tube, mirrors, a sensory projector, colour-changing lighting and a multi-media projections system, much of which the children could control themselves.

There was also a good selection of sensory toys which the children enjoyed investigating.

And a small tent...which found itself immediately full of children within moments of our arrival!

Thank You to all the staff at the Pavilion for accomodating us and making us feel so welcome. If you have the chance to visit the Pavilion then we recomend the 'Sensory4all'.
It is one of the many facilities that support the Hampshire Gateway card, which provides children with disabilities and their families great opportunites to get out and about.
