Doggy Dash!

On Tuesday 16th July we had our Sports Day. At the end of all the races and activities all of the children took part in a 'Doggy Dash' in aid of Guide Dogs.

But before that there was Sports Day. We had a variety of activites, both individual and team. All of our VI pupils took part, inclusive sport is a very important part of the provision for children with a visual imapirment.
There was some superb hula-hooping....

...and some very motivated sack racing!

It was a gloriously sunny and hot day, so a very important part of the afternoon was staying in the shade and having a cold ice lolly!

Then...the Doggy Dash. The children had some 'dog ears' to wear while racing (kindly lent to us from The Wildren School) and all had fun tearing up the race track on all fours!

It was a great afternoon of fun and fitness that raised over £300 for Guide Dogs. We would all like to thank all the children of Kings Copse for their enthusiasm and all those who raised sponsorship money for their generosity. We will now be able to sponsor our new Guide Dog, Harley.
Thank You

Year 4 Visit to Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower

On Friday 12th July Year 4 visited the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.
The Year 4 class has three pupils with a visual impairment, two partially sighted and one registered blind. The challenge for our Oasis team was to make this trip as accessible to the children as possible.

The Spinnaker Tower was a great experience for all the pupils.
Whether lying on the glass viewing deck with a friend...
Or having a sighted guide talk through the experience....
The children made the most of the resources available to gain an understanding of how Portsmouth developed over the centuries and the role the harbour played in this.
Our pupils enjoyed using the telescope to find specific locations in the city below...when someone wasn't standing in the way!
We had an excellent day...especially the weather!
We would like to thank the Staff and the Education team at the Spinnaker Tower for making our visit so successful.

In-Reach Disco

Friday 5th July was the last In-reach of the academic year...so we had a disco!...but with a difference.
The difference was teaching the children some classic 'dance floor fillers' such as the Macarena and YMCA.
We also had a special visitor...Taylor... a guide dog in training was brought along to meet the children.
Two volunteers from Year 5 set up the disco, including a great selection of disco lights, thank you boys!
 Sleeping for 'Superman'.
Getting confused with the ' Macarena'.
Then after a rather warm session inside we stepped outside to cool down...
 Make some new friends....
 Explore our outdoor adventure trail....
Then into the main hall for a quick snack....
 Including CAKE!!!

'VIP Club' - Goldilocks

The theme for the VIP club this Friday was 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'.

The children began by taking turns acting out the story, and wearing the wig!

Goldilocks arrives at the empty cottage to find three bowls of porridge....
She tries each bowl and eats up Baby Bear's porridge.....
 Then she tries three chairs....
 ...and breaks Baby Bear's chair...
...so Goldilocks decides to have a lie down...in Baby Bear's bed!
Then the Bears return and find someones been eating their porridge...
...and someone has broken Baby Bear's chair...
...and who is this in Baby Bear's bed?
...its Goldilocks...ohh!!! Off she runs!!!

Once we had taken our turn acting out the story the children then completed a number of learning activities linked to the story.

Using tactile resources to help to sequence the main events of the story.

Identifying and naming the material a spoon is made from, talking and describing its features.

Ordering real objects (Teddies & bowls) by size.

Then to finish a lovely afternoon, time for VIP Club tea! Where all our 'VI buddies' from the week are invited along to say thank you for being 'VI buddies' at break or lunch time.
